Land surveyors from W&A Engineering Athens verified distances and elevations for SEC Network’s World Record Cornhole Challenge broadcasted on Nov. 4, 2022, preceding the University of Georgia v. University of Tennessee football game.
The survey crew performing the certification included Assistant Director of Surveying Aaron Cobb, Survey Project Manager Timothy Davis, and Survey Crew Chief Josh Wallace. The trio joined members of the program’s production team on site in front of the University of Georgia Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries on November 2, 2022 to outline distances in preparation for the stage construction. This included identifying the standing world record distance of 75’1″, as well as both 76′ and 78′ markers for participants to attempt their record-breaking throws. The team planted stakes for the production staff to utilize in their construction layout.
With the markers set and the stages built, Cobb and Davis returned the morning of Nov. 5, 2022 to certify that the previously verified distances were, in fact, still accurate post construction. The team also set an additional 80′ marker to provide an additional challenge for participants.
W&A Engineering is excited about the opportunity to participate at SEC Nation GameDay. We certified the cornhole world record course, and we were glad that we could have a part in the festivities! Go Dawgs!
Junior Tunnell, Director of Surveying (Athens, Georgia)
During the SEC Network pregame coverage live in Athens, Georgia, it was none other than ESPN’s Marty Smith of Marty and McGee who threw the record-breaking throw!
“There is nothing that I’ve ever experienced that created the euphoria of winning the ‘Redneck Olympics,'” Smith said, still out of breath from his post-win celebration.
Smith now holds the Guiness World Record for the longest successful cornhole toss, a feat landing him not only in the 2023 Guiness Book of World Records but also at #5 of the SportsCenter Top 10.
W&A Engineering was proud to provide the land surveying services behind this truly record-breaking event, and we’re excited to add “GameDay Consultants” to our firm resume!
